University Students

Historically there has been considerable interest in whether students at Oxford and Cambridge Universities have higher rates of suicide than other young people. Several decades ago this appeared to have been the case. Over the past 30 years we have conducted several studies of suicide and self-harm in students at Oxford University.

We have shown that rates of suicide in Oxford University students have not been elevated compared with those for young people in the general population of England and Wales over the past 30 years (1995 and 2010). We have also investigated the characteristics of Oxford University students dying by suicide.

Using data collected through the Oxford Monitoring System for Attempted Suicide, in an early study (1978) we showed that rates of self–harm appeared to be lower in students than in the local general population. We confirmed this in much larger studies reported in 1995 and 2010. We have also investigated the characteristics of students presenting to hospital with self-harm (1995 and 2009/10).

In 2009 we published a major report on suicide and self-harm in students at the University.
