The National Suicide Prevention Strategy for England

launch of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy

Keith Hawton, Jacqui Smith (Minister of State for Health) and Simon Armson (Chief Executive, Samaritans) at the launch of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy for England on 16th September 2002 at the 9th European Symposium on Suicide and Suicidal Behaviour.

The Strategy aims to support the Saving Lives: Our Healthier Nation target of reducing the death rate from suicide by at least 20% by 2010. It seeks to be comprehensive, evidence-based, specific and subject to evaluation, and will be delivered as one of the core programmes of the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE).

The Strategy has 6 goals:

  1. To reduce risk in key high risk groups
  2. To promote mental well-being in the wider population
  3. To reduce the availability and lethality of suicide methods
  4. To improve reporting of suicidal behaviour in the media
  5. To promote research on suicide and suicide prevention
  6. To improve monitoring of progress towards the Saving Lives: Our Healthier Nation target for reducing suicide
