BALANCE
A large simple randomised clinical trial comparing lithium and valproate semisodium (Depakote) combination therapy with lithium monotherapy and with valproate semisodium monotherapy as maintenance treatment for bipolar disorder.

CEQUEL
CEQUEL is a randomised clinical trial of treatment for bipolar depression. The trial is comparing combination therapy with quetiapine plus lamotrigine with quetiapine monotherapy for treatment of bipolar depression.

CEQUEL will also:

• investigate the effect of adding folic acid to other treatments for bipolar depression
• find out which of the treatments best helps people to remain well after an episode of depression
• look for genetic factors that affect response to folic acid
